Maryland Justice Reinvestment Initiative
Background
The Maryland Justice Reinvestment Initiative is a nationwide, data-driven approach to improving public safety, reducing correctional costs, and reinvesting savings in programs that reduce crime and recidivism.
The initiative supports strategies that:
- Expand treatment for people with substance use disorders.
- Strengthen the role of crime victims in the criminal justice process.
- Focus correctional resources on individuals who pose the greatest risk to public safety.
- Improve community supervision through evidence-based practices.
Maryland's Justice Reinvestment Act
The Criminal Justice Programs Division oversees implementation of Maryland's Justice Reinvestment Act and administers reinvestment funding to support Justice Reinvestment Initiative priorities across the state.
