The Criminal Injuries Compensation Board (CICB) provides the following services:

- Process claims as efficiently as possible.
- Provide emergency and supplemental compensation awards when eligible.
- Offer interpretation services.
- Provide victim advocacy and support.
- Listen with compassion and respond to your concerns.
- Assist with completing compensation applications.
- Provide updates on the status of your claim.
- Refer you to community resources and support services.
- Coordinate with agencies and others involved in your case, when appropriate.
- Notify you of scheduled hearings and provide support during hearings.
- Provide community education and outreach programs.
Frequently Asked Questions for Victims
You may be eligible for compensation if you are:
- A person who was physically injured as the result of a crime or delinquent act.
- The surviving spouse or child of a homicide victim.
- A person who paid the funeral expenses of a homicide victim.
- A person who depended on a homicide victim for primary financial support.
- The parent, child, or spouse of an individual who is incarcerated for abuse, as defined in § 4-501 of the Family Law Article, if that individual lived with you before incarceration and provided financial support.
- A person who experienced psychological injury as the result of certain crimes.
Eligible claimants may be reimbursed for the following expenses:
- Medical expenses related to a physical injury.
- Mental health expenses resulting from certain crimes.
- Lost wages if the victim is unable to work because of the crime.
- Bereavement leave, up to two weeks or $2,000, whichever applies under program guidelines.
- Compensation for total or partial, temporary or permanent disability.
- Funeral expenses in cases involving homicide.
- Loss of financial support if the homicide victim provided financial support to the claimant.
- Up to 30 days of lost wages for a parent or guardian caring for a child who was injured as the result of a crime.
- Other eligible expenses approved by the Criminal Injuries Compensation Board.
To qualify for compensation, a victim must:
- Report the crime to the appropriate law enforcement agency within 48 hours, unless there is good cause for reporting it later.
- Have at least $100 in eligible expenses or lost wages.
A victim may not be eligible for compensation if:
- There is substantial evidence that the victim caused, provoked, or contributed to the crime that resulted in the injury.
- The victim does not cooperate with law enforcement or other appropriate authorities, unless there is good cause for not doing so.
