Governor's Office of Crime Prevention and Policy

Maryland Byrne Advisory Board

Background

The Maryland Byrne Advisory Board advises the Governor's Office of Crime Prevention and Policy on the administration of the Byrne State Crisis Intervention Program (Byrne SCIP/BSCI). The Board helps guide funding priorities for crisis intervention and gun violence reduction programs to support effective use of resources across Maryland.

Although the U.S. Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) no longer requires states to maintain a dedicated Byrne SCIP advisory board, Maryland continues to convene the Board to provide multidisciplinary guidance.

The Board includes representatives from:

  • Law enforcement
  • Community-based organizations
  • Courts
  • Prosecutors
  • Behavioral health providers
  • Victim service organizations
  • Legal counsel
  • Other relevant fields

Board members identify needs and challenges across Maryland and provide guidance on funding priorities, program development, and implementation of initiatives supported by Byrne SCIP funding.
