Sexual Assault Reimbursement Unit
The Sexual Assault Reimbursement Unit (SARU) administers the reimbursement program established under the Code of Maryland Regulations (COMAR) 10.12.02, Rape and Sexual Offenses – Physician and Hospital Charges.
The program reimburses eligible costs for medical forensic examinations, evidence collection, emergency medical treatment, and related services provided after an alleged rape, sexual assault, or child sexual abuse.
SARU helps reduce the financial burden on victims and their families by providing a straightforward reimbursement process for eligible medical forensic expenses, allowing them to focus on recovery.
SAFEs and nPEP Information and Forms
Effective January 1, 2025, healthcare providers must use the reimbursement forms when submitting claims for:
- Sexual Assault Forensic Examinations (SAFEs)
- Non-occupational post-exposure prophylaxis (nPEP) medication
- Related follow-up care

Drug-Facilitated Sexual Assault Toxicology Testing
Guidance is available for reimbursement of Drug-Facilitated Sexual Assault (DFSA) toxicology testing.
Beginning January 1, 2025, hospitals must submit all required documentation with reimbursement claims. Claims that do not meet the documentation requirements may not be eligible for reimbursement.
